Survey on the Postponement of a South Sudan Unity Government

By Imad Coulibaly

On Thursday the 7th of November, South Sudanese President Salva Kiir, and rebel leader Riek Machar jointly announced that no South Sudanese unity government would be formed before the November 12 deadline. A 100-day postponement for the unity government was communicated. Kiir is accused of blocking the formation of a government by not providing funds for, amongst other issues, governance and security arrangements. It is consequently questioned how committed to establishing peace the South Sudanese president is.  The formation of a transitional unity government was agreed in a September 2018 peace deal that ended a 5-year civil war in the world’s youngest country which killed nearly half a million people and displaced over 3 million.
